The Dolomites

The Dolomites are part of the Alps, but have their own identity due to it’s particular history. They are also called the Pale Mountains. The mountain range extends over the two northernmost regions of Italy: South Tyrol and Trentino.
Due to this location, this area is also very interesting in terms of culture. No fewer than three languages are spoken in the region: German, Italian and Ladin. Until 1918, the border between Italy and Austria ran right through the Dolomites, which explains why they speak German and Italian. Ladin is a 1000-year-old “primal language” from South Tyrol which is still spoken today.
